In addtion to the reasons stated in the article, there is the case of using two hard drives in a compter. A symbolic link can point to another physical hard drive. If you happen to be using a small SSD (Solid State Drive) for the operating system (because booting and program loads are fast), you could use a symbolic link for your "Documents" or "Pictures".  The link would point to a location on the HD, thus not allowing large amounts of documents or pictures to fill up your SSD.
