The Monterey release is very large. Getting close to 12GB (and growing) You might need 26+GB of free space on the system disk to upgrade. Most of use our diskspace for out stuff. Even after cleanup, moving files to a cloud provider, etc. might still not have the free space. Why? Apple macOS keeps some file space in reserve. performance reasons. After doing ALL the recommended space reclaim procedures if you still don't have the needed diskspace - try this:

as an administrator open the Terminal app/window type these commands: dd if=/dev/zero of=space.tmp bs=20m

let this run until you see: No space left on device this command needs to be run on the macOS system disk

now the command rm space.tmp

now use this command to check your progress df -h /

this procedure should get you closer to the needed free space.

why does this work/help? once the dd command starts requesting more and more disk space to hold the ever growing space.tmp file macOS will start releasing the disk space it is holding onto.

YOU will need to restart macOS to realize the reclaimed space.

works for me, did it help you?

Much more information on the update/upgrade to Monterey is given on the Cyber Security SIG website. Go to MEETING NOTES on the left side click on Seminars open either of the two Monterey seminars on the second slide of the PDF file click on the green link Audio recording of this session as MP4 file this will download a MP4 file that can be viewed on your mac, PC, tablet, etc. WITH audio so rewind, pause, magnify, etc.
